Sustainable development. Analysis of the term
Abstract
The article undertakes a critical analysis of the term 'sustainable development'. While sustainability describes a situation of equilibrium, does development point to dynamic imbalance. ‘Sustainable development’ is thus an oxymoron. Possible historical and cultural factors that may have facilitated tolerance towards inconsistent language and words without clear meaning are discussed. These are examined critically in the light of Harry Frankfurt’s term bullshit.
