English abstract

Will the curriculum contribute to the Bildung of the students?

Bildung has long been a central part of the school’s purpose and has a central place in the latest curriculum, Kunnskapsløftet 2020 (LK20). I argue that the goal of Bildung is difficult to achieve within the framework set by the curriculum and I give two reasons for this: Firstly, I show how the goal of Bildung is too vaguely defined in the curriculum. Where the educational learning goals are defined through detailed discussions of the concept of competence, there are hardly any discussions of the concept of Bildung. The second reason is the connection between Bildung and competence in LK20. In the article I show that competence and Bildung are different forms of knowledge. Simplified, the difference can be summed up as follows: Knowledge leads to competence when it makes our inner and outer world objectively understandable and manageable. Knowledge contributes to Bildung when it makes normative or moral aspects of the world comprehensible. In relation to nature, for example, knowledge contributes to Bildung when it makes the value and subjective meaning of nature visible. As such, nature is experienced as normative, as something that holds us responsible and gives life a direction. The difference between Bildung and competence means that the goal of Bildung is difficult to achieve through the competence-oriented framework of LK20.
}, journal={Nordisk tidsskrift for pedagogikk og kritikk}, author={Fauskevåg, Odin}, year={2022}, month={apr.} }
